Brophy introduced the concepts of Agency and Liminality as an alternate explanation of online usage. For her, agency occurs in both humans and technology; agency in one creates agency in the other. She suggests this interaction, both with the digital world and the real world, necessarily produces liminal situations where users are in both and neither places at the same time.
